More than 54 million Americans are declared overweight or obese according to body mass index (BMI), found to be in good health, says a new study published in the International Journal of Obesity.
Researchers suggest, rather than focus too much on the ideal body weight according to the BMI, perform these checks as a way to determine whether the weight is fit or not.

Waist size
If your stomach has been home to the excess fat, you may be at greater risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Try to measure waist circumference, by using a measuring tape just above your hip bone or around the navel. Healthy waist circumference for women is less than 89 cm.

Calculate the heart rate
In a relaxed state, take the time to put two fingers above the wrist or neck and then count the number of beats in one minute. When is between 60 and 100 per minute, your heart rate normal mark.
A normal heart rate (not too fast) generally implies a good physical health.
Be careful with a less active lifestyle, because it can cause the heart rate to be faster because the heart must work harder.

Percentage body fat
Unlike BMI, determine the percentage of body fat can actually reveal the amount of excess fat, apart from muscle mass.
A healthy percentage of body fat for women is 20 to 32 percent. To measure it, you can use this machine in the fitness center or clinic physiotherapist.
